New York singer/producer Toulouse approaches his music with a delicateness that demands the listener silence the world around them and lean in for a moment or more. New song "I Will Follow You" sees the Nigerian-born artist re-inventing venerable, oft-covered song "I Will Follow Him" with his particularly pretty touch.
Originally made famous in 1961 by Little Peggy March, "I Will Follow Him" has served as wide-reaching sample source and cover inspiration. Toulouse's fixation began when he heard the song in Sister Act (a fact that sheds light on the qualities he chose to highlight in his arrangement).
"The movie Sister Act is a right-of-passage movie for me and one that my father added to our household collection when we were still residing in Nigeria," says Toulouse. "One of the first memories I had of being elated by music arrangement is when I first watched the final scene of the movie as a young boy. I was riveted. I fell in love with that rendition because of the solemnity of it, then the quick change into a big joyous uplifting grand chorus."
As with many covers, the source material was unknown to Toulouse for some time, making the Sister Act version a sort of source text for the singer.
"It wasn't until years later that I found the other versions, but I retained that enjoyment of arrangement and continue to infuse and craft my songs that way," he adds. "I re-interpreted the song to be a bit more intimate and personal and communicate that feeling of devotion through simplicity space and texture and, of course, a little earnest build."
